An Ideal LASIK Candidate is Determined by Nine Criteria

The success of a Lasik eye surgery relies on careful patient evaluation. At Yaldo Eye Center, we offer free evaluations to find out if you are a candidate for Lasik. Not every patient is an ideal candidate for LASIK. Therefore, a thorough screening process is performed to ensure you meet the guidelines required to ensure successful results from LASIK. The subsequent checklist identifies the nine criteria suggestive of an ideal LASIK candidate at Yaldo Eye Center.

You Must Have Generally Healthy Eyes

Any eye diseases, which could interfere with the way the eyes react to laser vision correction or heal following the procedure, must be totally resolved. These conditions include eye injuries, eye infections, conjunctivitis, severe dry eye syndrome, etc. Individuals with persistent dry eyes, may see their condition worsen after Lasik.

Dry eye symptoms include:

• a scratchy feeling in the eye
• burning and stinging
• recurrent blurry vision
• decreased tolerance to wind
• excessive tears

It is important that you inform the team at Yaldo Eye Center of any dry eye symptoms prior to surgery. Women are at much greater risk for developing dry eyes after Lasik following menopause. Men become at greater risk later in life as well. The issue of dry eyes must be addressed and treated prior to LASIK.

We are usually able to identify dry eyes during the preoperative exam. Once identified, the condition can usually be successfully treated so the individual can then proceed with Lasik. Treatment options include flaxseed or fish oil supplements, artificial tears, medicated eye drops, punctal plugs, or a combination of these treatments.

Uncontrolled glaucoma and cataracts that restrict an individual’s vision will usually prevent someone from being a LASIK or PRK candidate as Lasik will not help these conditions.

Your Cornea Must Be Thick Enough For Lasik

Lasik is performed by reshaping the cornea, which is the transparent layer on the surface of the eye. It is this reshaping that improves your visual acuity. If Lasik is performed on a cornea that is too thin or if the cornea surface is too irregular and misshapen (a person with keratoconus) the procedure results could be detrimental, and vision could be impaired.

Due to advances in technology such as the use of a femtosecond laser instead of a microkeratome, surgeons are now able to make a thinner corneal flap preserving more corneal tissue. This allows some patients with thin corneas to qualify for the procedure.

Despite the innovative technologies, individuals who are not a candidate for LASIK or PRK may find that an alternative procedure such as implantable lenses (phakic IOLs) are a great option.

Your Pupils Should Not Be Oversized

Individuals who have naturally large pupils could be at risk of side effects which would affect vision in low light conditions. These effects include glares, starbursts, and halos. The ability to drive at night could especially be compromised by these side effects. This is why some patients experience a deterioration in night vision after Lasik.

Your Refractive Error Must Not Be Extreme

Whether it is due to farsightedness, nearsightedness or astigmatism, individuals with severe refractive error and a very high prescription, may be advised against Lasik.

Very high amounts of myopia could possibly require the removal of too much corneal tissue in order to achieve clear vision and is therefore not possible to attain safely. Therefore, individuals with a severe refractive error may find that our Clear Lens Exchange option is more suitable for their needs.

You Must Be Over a Certain Age

Some surgeons require an individual to be over the age of 18, while others, maybe 21. Minors can be treated at the discretion of the surgeon when there is consent from the parent or guardian. We typically require patients’ prescriptions to be stable for 1 year before qualifying them for Lasik.

The treatment has no true age limit. However, due to the common age-related condition called presbyopia which causes the deterioration of your reading vision, individuals over the age of 40 may still require reading glasses. Such patients should opt for a monovision procedure or a BiFocal ClearLens.

You Must Have Stable Vision For At Least a Year

Young adults and teens frequently encounter yearly changes in their glasses or contact lens prescription.  Refractive errors must be stable for a minimum of 12 months before Lasik can be performed.

In general, it is nearsightedness that gradually worsens but there could be other changes that occur in the eye as well. Young people are not ideal candidates for LASIK until their eyes have settled. You Must Be In Good Health

Persons with uncontrolled autoimmune diseases or degenerative conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, AIDS and type one diabetes may not be ideal candidates. Patients with HIV who have a healthy immune cell count may be a LASIK candidate.

Surgeon’s opinions vary on which diseases pose suitable risks in specific cases and which diseases automatically disqualify an individual from LASIK. Specific medications have been found to increase risks related to Lasik. Immunosuppressants can impede post-operative healing.

Pregnant Women Should Delay Lasik

Women who are pregnant or nursing undergo hormonal changes that can temporarily change the shape of their cornea, thus causing temporary changes in vision. Therefore, such women are temporarily not suitable for Lasik. After a few months, hormone levels and vision will be returned to normal. Once this occurs, you will be able to have Lasik.

You Must Have Realistic Expectations

Lasik is one of the safest elective procedure and the vast majority of Lasik patients experience excellent results. However, before you decide to undergo the procedure, it is very important to take the time to become aware of all the potential risks, side effects, and complications associated with the treatment.

Experienced eye surgeons will carefully determine and advise potential candidates as to whether laser eye surgery is a good option or whether a different procedure may be more suitable. Lasik vs Liposuction

This is significantly greater than some of the cosmetic surgeries mentioned earlier, but still low in comparison to Lasik eye surgery and even less popular refractive surgeries such as PRK, Lasek, and the ever-increasing Multifocal implants, or ICL procedure.

Lasik vs Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as the tummy tuck, is a very popular cosmetic procedure in the United States. Over 127,000 tummy tuck surgeries were recorded in 2018. An abdominoplasty is a procedure that entails a repairing of the abdomen and removal of excess skin. When patients lose weight they are often left with excess skin which cannot be eliminated naturally. During a tummy tuck, excess skin around the midsection is trimmed and tightened creating a tighter tummy.

This process consists of opening the abdomen and restitching loose and torn abdominal muscles. This results in a firmer and harder midsection which cannot be attained naturally if the muscles are torn. The abdominal muscles are often stretched when people gain a significant amount of weight and lose it abruptly. Abdominal muscles can become permanently torn with pregnancy and for this reason, it is very often included in a mommy makeover.

The world of refractive surgery is large and complex. There are many different surgeries regularly performed to treat refractive error all of them have variables and sub-alternatives, which can and should be considered.

Lasik and Lasek are two techniques that have been available for decades. It has been shown that the efficacy of one with respect to the other differs in certain aspects and although Lasik is more commonly recommended, the differences are not so significant.

Other procedures are likely to emerge over time, along with advancements in technology and the creation of new devices, or with the revision of previous techniques.

An example of this progress is CATz Lasik, where the use of topography-guided lasers gave greater precision to an already existing technique. This is one of the largest findings in terms of eye surgery in recent times; however, it is not the only one.

These three aspects (Lasik, Lasek, and CATz) end up being one of the most viable options for correcting refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and/or astigmatism. Let us take a close look at each of them.

Lasik: The Gold Standard

Since 1991 this type of eye surgery has been practiced around the country, however, it is based on other procedures that date back more than 50 years. Yaldo Eye Center has been offering Lasik eye surgery in Michigan for over 20 years.

The aim is to eliminate part of the cornea to correct refraction defects, and that in turn, the patient can achieve 20/20 vision or better. The treatment is quick and painless.

This technique is possible thanks to the development of the Excimer Laser, which is capable of extracting tissue with high precision and without damaging other neighboring cells. It is important to know that it is the same Excimer laser that is used in other techniques that address the surface of the cornea such as PRK and Lasek.

The surgery, despite being quite old, is very safe compared to other medical procedures. The risks have been diminished with time and this technique has become the gold standard for refractive surgery. However, although it is a great treatment, it cannot be used on everyone.

Only those over 18 years old with stabilized refractive error, and those under 40-45 years old, who are beginning to experience presbyopia, are candidates for Lasik. In addition, if the patient has any type of eye disease such as glaucoma, this should be treated before attempting Lasik surgery.

Lasik is not painful, no matter how severe the degree of refractive error one has. Some people claim to have a bit of discomfort; however, no laser-related damage causes this symptom.

It is important that, in order to qualify for this procedure, your degree of refractive error must be completely stable. If your dioptres have increased within the last year, you may not yet be a candidate for Lasik, as your condition may continue to increase even though it has been temporarily corrected.

CATz Custom Topography Guided Lasik

This surgery is a technical variant of Lasik, it is an innovative and novel procedure invented by Japanese scientists and brought to the state of Michigan by Dr. Yaldo in 2014. When it comes to modernized techniques, there is no Lasik technique more advanced than CATz Lasik.

Lasek – A Great Alternative To Lasik

This is the acronym for Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, an eye surgery that arose around 1999, long after LASIK. In this case, the essence of the technique is to reshape the corneal tissue by creating a flap with the corneal epithelium.

The outer edge of your cornea, the circular rim in the center of your eye, must be removed so that the laser can reduce the thickness of your cornea and thus correct the refractive error.

In this case, topical anesthesia is used and an alcohol solution is added to the cornea to soften the upper tissue. The process does not take long, perhaps 5-10 minutes depending on the surgeon.

Not everyone can undergo Lasik, not only because of the age requirement but also because of the degree of refractive error required to be a candidate for Lasik Grand Rapids. 

On the other hand, it can treat refractive error in patients with corneas too thin for Lasik, even for corneas that have scars from previous processes or eyes that have suffered from glaucoma. It causes some pain after surgery and the recovery period may be longer than Lasik. It is important to mention that often these types of corrections are useful in athletes who practice high impact sports.

Guidelines on Travel After LASIK

The healing period after LASIK surgery at the Yaldo Eye Center is usually very quick. However, patients often have doubts about how soon they can resume travel activities. In this article, we will cover all the dos and don’ts of travel after Lasik.

Driving after LASIK Eye Surgery

Driving after lasik eye surgery is not recommended. You must bear in mind that after undergoing LASIK surgery you will not be able to drive back home, that is why it is recommended that the patient goes to the surgery with a companion. Often eye surgeons prescribe a mild sedative, such as Valium, which should be taken before surgery to help patients stay relaxed during the procedure. The effect of the medication takes several hours to disappear, therefore the perception and reaction of patients will be affected during that time. In addition, after the surgery, the patient’s vision will be blurred due to the lubricating drops applied immediately after the procedure. Because of these two factors, it is important for patients to arrange for someone to drive them home following the procedure. 

After the LASIK procedure, patients may experience dry eye symptoms during the healing and recovery process. The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center reports that the eye is more vulnerable to drying environments in the six months after LASIK surgery. Dry eyes can make vision blurry during the first days of the healing process. The use of artificial tears is very useful to relieve the symptoms of dry eye. Some patients, particularly those in dry climates and air-conditioned environments, may choose to apply drops every few hours for a week or two after Michigan laser eye surgery. It is not recommended to drive after lasik eye surgery.

In the first 24 hours after your surgery, most patients experience a significant improvement in their vision, approximately 20/40 or better. The vision then continues to improve gradually over the next few weeks. Usually, the surgeon schedules a postoperative checkup the day after LASIK surgery. Most patients feel comfortable enough with their vision to go to their appointment.

Some patients may experience sensitivity to light and choose to delay driving for a day or two. The use of sunglasses is recommended to minimize exposure to intense sunlight, especially the week after surgery.

Flying after LASIK Eye Surgery

Flying after lasik eye surgery is very common. Most patients with LASIK are allowed to fly during their next-day follow-up appointment. This is good news for patients who traveled outside their city to perform this procedure, as well as for those who travel frequently for work or pleasure reasons.

The eye is not affected by the pressurization of the altitude in the cockpit of an airplane differently after laser eye surgery. However, because the cabins of the aircraft have low humidity, the patient is usually more prone to suffer symptoms of dry eye during the flight. Therefore, when traveling on an airplane, use lubricant drops more frequently to combat the dryness caused by air conditioning. Also, if you have dry eyes while on an airplane, closing your eyes during the flight and limiting participation in activities that involve staring (working on a computer or reading) can help you reduce symptoms. It is important to avoid rubbing the eyes or having dust in the eyes. Good hydration is always important, drink extra water when your flies can be very beneficial.
